White vinegar works well for removing rust from small metal items. Leave for a couple of hours and then use the lemon rind to scrub off the rust. If you re dealing with a lightly rusted surface you may just need to give it a quick scrub with a brush. Rinse the metal item and shake dry. However badly rusted metal areas need more prep work and possibly a special primer. I am amazed at how many people have not heard of this method before.

The wire brush may scratch the metal but since you will have to paint and re galvanize it anyway this is ok.
